Athens is a wonderful city to visit! It has a rich history, filled with stories, and thanks to a passion for preservation and restoration by community members many of those stories are still alive.
Arts, culture, history, and recreation…whatever your idea of good time is, while staying in Athens, you won’t run out of things to do and see, the city offering a rich array of appealing attractions, housed within and around its limits, among the most popular ones being:
The Indian Mounds, situated in nearby New Marshfield, which is a combination of history and recreation, a wonderful campground, where you, along with family or friends can get in touch with nature and enjoy yourself, by taking advantage of the many recreational opportunities, such as hiking or camping, and also where you can experience the local history, The Indian Mounds being the site where Athens County’s first residents lived, known as the Adena Indians, a hunter gatherer society that preceded the Hopewells and other Native-American cultures.
The Kennedy Museum of Art, which can be found on Ohio University campus, named in honor of Edwin L. and Ruth E. Kennedy, featuring significant collections that include important southwest Native American textiles and jewelry, and a renowned contemporary print collection. It is considered being one of Athens most popular attractions.
The spooky Wilson Hall’s Room 428, on Ohio University campus, representing one of the city’s most intriguing stories. The room is locked and sealed, being supposedly haunted, after students reported objects flying off of shelves and smashing into walls, doors opening and closing and sightings of a student who once lived in room 428, a female student who violently died, while practicing the occult in the room. It is also said that Wilson Hall was actually built above a plot of graves, originally part of the Ridges cemetery system.
The Dairy Barn Arts Center, which can be found on Dairy Lane, considered being a must see for any Athens County visitor, featuring internationally-recognized exhibits displayed in a 6500 square-foot gallery, the Dairy Barn also being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Annual KidFest is perhaps the most favorite and expected of all Athens’ annual events. The fun and entertaining day-long event, which takes place in April and which celebrates all children in Athens County, has been a local tradition for 20 years now, and each time, has offered a long list of fun-filled activities for the little ones, as well as for the entire family, including musical performances, balloon animals, games, food, cartoon fun and much, much more.
If your trip to Athens is set in April, be sure not to miss this fabulous event, considered a must, especially if you’re visiting Athens accompanied by family!
